We are SO excited to be using iPads in our classroom this year during our small group reading and math lessons. Below is a list of some of the apps that we are using in our classroom, so that you can use them at home, too! If you have a great app to share, please email it to me!
Reading Raven: Reading Raven is a great app for beginning readers. It begins with basic phonics skills to help students match letters. As students progress, they can move on to finding rhyming words, reading basic CVC words, and eventually reading and spelling words.
Sight Words: This is a great app to practice basic sight words from class. Students are encouraged to read, spell, and record various words. They are also presented with fun games to practice the spelling of each word.
Sound Sorting: A great app created by Lakeshore Learning! This app is designed for students to practice the beginning sounds of words. They have to match the pictures given to the correct beginning sound.
Phonics Tic Tac Toe: A slightly more advanced app, this game- created by Lakeshore Learning - gives students practice with more complex phonics skills such as beginning blends and phonemes, as well as more complex vowel sounds.
Lakeshore ABC's: This is a great app for practicing letter recognition and sounds. The app allows you to choose which letter you would like to focus on, then gives you practice with hearing the sound, choosing pictures that match, and writing the letter.
Splash Math Kindergarten: This app is great for practicing basic math skills such as counting, number recognition, patterns, and beginning addition and subtraction skills. Multiple players can be added and settings can be customized for each player.There is a free version, however the full version allows for practice of more skills.
Monkey Math School: Another great math app that has a variety of different skills to help students learn. Multiple players can be added and settings can be customized for each player.
Kids ABC Phonics: This is a great beginning learner app for students working on letter recognition and letter sounds. It also begins to help with building basic words and blending. The 2nd in a series of apps.
ABC Alphabet Phonics: A great FREE app that practices basic letter recognition of upper and lower case letters.
Letter Quiz: A great letter practice app for tracing letters, matching upper and lower case letters, and playing ABC memory games.
Counting Madness Full: This is a great math and counting practice app that reinforces number recognition and 1-1 counting through fun games and colorful images. The full version is better then the free version- just be ware that it does not have oral directions.
Montessori Letter Sounds: A great app to help reinforce letters and letter sounds. There are 4 different games in this app, however the students have to work through the first two games in order to build to the last games. Customizable for multiple players.
Montessori Crossword: Excellent app to reinforce basic sounds and phonemic awareness. Multiple levels allows you to choose what is right for your child- basic 3 letter words, consonant blends, and more complex words. You can also focus just on one sound to target how to spell words using letter sounds.
Letter Quiz: This app helps with basic letter recognition through tracing letters, choosing the correct letter, matching upper and lowercase letters, and letter flashcards.
Number Quiz: Same as the letter quiz but with numbers! Work on reinforcing number recognition through 20.
Word Wall HD: This app has lots of different games and activities that reinforce letter sounds and words. Start with writing and matching abc's and making basic 3 letter words with the same rhyme. Move on to searching for words, reading basic words, and spelling simple words using picture clues.
Word Magic: Excellent and simple app for letter sounds and recognition. Students are given a picture and have to work to find the missing letter/sound. Can be made more complex based on where the missing letter is in the word- beginning, vowels, and ending.
Monkey Word School Adventure: Much like Monkey Math School Adventure, this is a wonderful, fully customizable app that reinforces various areas of letters, rhyme, and phonemic awareness. The entire app is easy to customize for each player, and builds upon the skills that they have developed.
